blood sugar control

A friend of mine, when taking insulin cant control her blood sugar.?

My friend has recently developed diabetes. She was prescribed insulin. However, when she takes the insulin she is not able to control her blood sugars. This past month, she stopped taking the insulin without telling the DR. because when she had told the dr. she wanted to stop taking it before he was against it, but she still checks her blood sugar regularly. When not taking the insulin she is able to keep her blood sugars within the normal ranges. Is this a good idea, should she tell the dr. that she is not taking the insulin? Is she harming her self by doing this?

Your friend sounds like she needs a new doctor. If she’s a type two (and it certainly sounds like it), then she should only need to watch her diet and get some daily exercise.

If she’s a type one (not likely) then the insulin should help regulate the blood sugar.

Interesting.

That makes me angry. At the doctor, not your friend. If her blood sugar stays in normal range without the insulin, she certainly does not need it. I’m assuming your friend is a type 2 diabetic … ? For type 2s insulin should be a last resort. If she can’t keep herself in range any longer, then there are other medicines they should put her on before they resort to insulin.

If the blood sugar level is maintained with in normal then you should not worry of insulin or anything.

    Fasting Plasma Glucose Test:
It measures your blood glucose after you have gone at least 8 hours without eating. This test is used to detect diabetes or pre-diabetes.

    Normal: 99 mg/dl or 5.5 mmol/l and below
    Pre-diabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dl or 5.55 to 6.94 mmol/l (impaired fasting glucose)
    Diabetes: 126 mg/dl or 7 mmol/l and above

Dr Peachy is right. Your friend needs to RUN find a new doctor. Some of us have to take the insulin or have no control at all. But most can be in control without it. I don’t have to take much of the bolus insulin, but a little bit sometimes helps a bunch. I do have to take the background or basal insulin. And it is helping to make me fluffier every day.

Tell your friend to RUN find a new doctor.

Your friend should be seeing an endocrinologist for her diabetes. there are 2 types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is the juvenile type – insulin dependent which requires insulin. Type 2 is the non-insulin dependent type. She should follow the instructions set by her doctor. If she is non-compliant with not taking the insulin then she is causing further damage to her already compromised body. Now if she has problems with doctor, she needs to communicate her concerns. If the doctor does not listen to her concerns, then she should get another doctor.

She needs to tell her doctor she stopped taking it. She also needs to test after meals to make sure its within normal ranges.

Print off this file and give it to her. Its about how to test before and after meals to know what’s really going on. If she does these tests and still falls within normal ranges, she might not need insulin for now, but she needs to be honest with her doctor.

Here’s the link. Its a PDF. Save it and print it off.

This is for diabetcs in the USA

This really helped me get a handle on my diabetes and my diabetic husband is now doing it too. Your friend can use this method of testing to find out if she really is in control or not. She could be harming herself. If her blood sugar goes over the limits given for fasting and after meals, then she is harming herself.

She needs to talk to her doctor honestly, this is a very serious disease and you can’t mess around with it. She should also know that insulin can take a month to get regulated to the right amount. Her doctor can’t help her do that if she’s not honest with him. She may need only a very small amount or she may only need to control her food and exercise for now.

If she’s a type one diabetic, going off the insulin is very very dangerous. If she’s type 2, she might be able to get away with it for a while, but she must test frequently to make sure it stays under the levels given in the PDF, to avoid damage to her eyes, nerves, kidneys, etc.
