I had to get a newspaper article and make a story of it:

She had golden locks that resemble a cascade of waters. Her name was Neumann and she was in the 9th grade. Active as can be she joined the cross country team and found herself excelling. However, Neumann started noticing that she lost 10 pounds and became extremely irritable. She did not want to go to Mother of our Redeemers Catholic church and this was very unusual since Neumann used to love attending church and she was in the church chorus as well as the church youth group but her decrease passion towards church made her parents fret. Neumann was a petite girl who wandered from place to place with a careless motion,she had a boyfriend named Jacob who loved her dearly. Neumann was feeling very sick that week and after going to the doctor with her boyfriend Jacob she confirmed she was pregnant. Her parents did not know what was going on and she was too scared to tell them so she decided to keep it a secret until she had the strength and courage to tell them. Days passed and her symptoms increased to the point that her parents began to notice something was wrong and her parents asked her if she wanted to go to the doctor “No I am fine it will pass”, she said. Her biggest fear was going to the doctor with her parents and having the doctor say she was pregnant. Two days later as she was sprinting outside she felt so sick she collapsed. Her coach immediately called her parents and Neumann was rushed to the doctors. “Your daughter had a Diabetic Ketoacidosis”, the doctor said. “There is nothing our god can’t cure”, said the mother. The doctor prescribed some medication but her father politely refused he said there god will heal her by natural remedy. From that day on her parents began taking her to church while her condition became worse. She had diabetes and she knew she needed medicine. “Mom I need medicine. I can’t depend on this church. This is ridiculous I’m going to die!”, said Neumann. Her mother ignored her as she rubbed holy water all over her head. Two months later Neumann died. Jacob took it upon himself to convict Neumann’s parents of reckless homicide for using prayer rather than medical care for their dying daughter and her unborn child.

*For your story, I modified the dialogue because she sounded too grammatically correct, and also you need to stick with past tense, or stick with present tense. When you say it was "confirmed she was pregnant", you have to indicate somewhere before that part that she suspected she was pregnant because you used the word confirmed. Otherwise, just say "the doctor told her she was pregnant". You don’t need to be that specific about the church, it’s kind of irrelevant. Also, somewhere in there I would add that her parents found out she was pregnant, either by Jacob telling them when he convicted the parents, or she gave in and told them. For the last sentence, it sounds a bit awkward by using "dying daughter and her unborn child", since she is dead now, but wasn’t dead when they used prayer rather than medical care. Perhaps you should rephrase it? Either way, you have a very complex story squeezed into a short story, which was very interesting!

"MILK"Just the word itself sounds comforting! "How about a nice cup of hot milk?" The last time you heard that question it was from someone who cared for you–and you appreciated their effort.

The entire matter of food and especially that of milk is surrounded with emotional and cultural importance. Milk was our very first food. If we were fortunate it was our mother’s milk. A loving link, given and taken. It was the only path to survival. If not mother’s milk it was cow’s milk or soy milk "formula"–rarely it was goat, camel or water buffalo milk.

Now, we are a nation of milk drinkers. Nearly all of us. Infants, the young, adolescents, adults and even the aged. We drink dozens or even several hundred gallons a year and add to that many pounds of "dairy products" such as cheese, butter, and yogurt.

Can there be anything wrong with this? We see reassuring images of healthy, beautiful people on our television screens and hear messages that assure us that, "Milk is good for your body." Our dieticians insist that: "You’ve got to have milk, or where will you get your calcium?" School lunches always include milk and nearly every hospital meal will have milk added. And if that isn’t enough, our nutritionists told us for years that dairy products make up an "essential food group." Industry spokesmen made sure that colourful charts proclaiming the necessity of milk and other essential nutrients were made available at no cost for schools. Cow’s milk became "normal."

You may be surprised to learn that most of the human beings that live on planet Earth today do not drink or use cow’s milk. Further, most of them can’t drink milk because it makes them ill.

There are students of human nutrition who are not supportive of milk use for adults. Here is a quotation from the March/April 1991 Utne Reader:

If you really want to play it safe, you may decide to join the growing number of Americans who are eliminating dairy products from their diets altogether. Although this sounds radical to those of us weaned on milk and the five basic food groups, it is eminently viable. Indeed, of all the mammals, only humans–and then only a minority, principally Caucasians–continue to drink milk beyond babyhood. Who is right? Why the confusion? Where best to get our answers? Can we trust milk industry spokesmen? Can you trust any industry spokesmen? Are nutritionists up to date or are they simply repeating what their professors learned years ago? What about the new voices urging caution?

I believe that there are three reliable sources of information. The first, and probably the best, is a study of nature. The second is to study the history of our own species. Finally we need to look at the world’s scientific literature on the subject of milk.

Let’s look at the scientific literature first. From 1988 to 1993 there were over 2,700 articles dealing with milk recorded in the "Medicine" archives. Fifteen hundred of theses had milk as the main focus of the article. There is no lack of scientific information on this subject. I reviewed over 500 of the 1,500 articles, discarding articles that dealt exclusively with animals, esoteric research and inconclusive studies.

How would I summarize the articles? They were only slightly less than horrifying. First of all, none of the authors spoke of cow’s milk as an excellent food, free of side effects and the "perfect food" as we have been led to believe by the industry. The main focus of the published reports seems to be on intestinal colic, intestinal irritation, intestinal bleeding, anemia, allergic reactions in infants and children as well as infections such as salmonella. More ominous is the fear of viral infection with bovine leukemia virus or an AIDS-like virus as well as concern for childhood diabetes. Contamination of milk by blood and white (pus) cells as well as a variety of chemicals and insecticides was also discussed. Among children the problems were allergy, ear and tonsillar infections, bedwetting, asthma, intestinal bleeding, colic and childhood diabetes. In adults the problems seemed centered more around heart disease and arthritis, allergy, sinusitis, and the more serious questions of leukemia, lymphoma and cancer.

I think that an answer can also be found in a consideration of what occurs in nature – what happens with free living mammals and what happens with human groups living in close to a natural state as "hunter-gatherers".

Our paleolithic ancestors are another crucial and interesting group to study. Here we are limited to speculation and indirect evidences, but the bony remains available for our study are remarkable. There is no doubt whatever that these skeletal remains reflect great strength, muscularity (the size of the muscular insertions show this), and total absence of advanced osteoporosis. And if you feel that these people are not important for us to study, consider that today our genes are programming our bodies in almost exactly the same way as our ancestors of 50,000 to 100,000 years ago.

WHAT IS MILK?

Milk is a maternal lactating secretion, a short term nutrient for new-borns. Nothing more, nothing less. Invariably, the mother of any mammal will provide her milk for a short period of time immediately after birth. When the time comes for "weaning", the young offspring is introduced to the proper food for that species of mammal.

A familiar example is that of a puppy. The mother nurses the pup for just a few weeks and then rejects the young animal and teaches it to eat solid food. Nursing is provided by nature only for the very youngest of mammals. Of course, it is not possible for animals living in a natural state to continue with the drinking of milk after weaning.

IS ALL MILK THE SAME?

Then there is the matter of where we get our milk. We have settled on the cow because of its docile nature, its size, and its abundant milk supply. Somehow this choice seems "normal" and blessed by nature, our culture, and our customs. But is it natural? Is it wise to drink the milk of another species of mammal?

Consider for a moment, if it was possible, to drink the milk of a mammal other than a cow, let’s say a rat. Or perhaps the milk of a dog would be more to your liking. Possibly some horse milk or cat milk. Do you get the idea? Well, I’m not serious about this, except to suggest that human milk is for human infants, dogs’ milk is for pups, cows’ milk is for calves, cats’ milk is for kittens, and so forth. Clearly, this is the way nature intends it. Just use your own good judgement on this one.

Milk is not just milk. The milk of every species of mammal is unique and specifically tailored to the requirements of that animal. For example, cows’ milk is very much richer in protein than human milk. Three to four times as much. It has five to seven times the mineral content. However, it is markedly deficient in essential fatty acids when compared to human mothers’ milk. Mothers’ milk has six to ten times as much of the essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. (Incidentally, skimmed cow’s milk has no linoleic acid). It simply is not designed for humans.

Food is not just food, and milk is not just milk. It is not only the proper amount of food but the proper qualitative composition that is critical for the very best in health and growth. Biochemists and physiologists – and rarely medical doctors – are gradually learning that foods contain the crucial elements that allow a particular species to develop its unique specializations.

Clearly, our specialization is for advanced neurological development and delicate neuromuscular control. We do not have much need of massive skeletal growth or huge muscle groups as does a calf. Think of the difference between the demands make on the human hand and the demands on a cow’s hoof. Human new-borns specifically need critical material for their brains, spinal cord and nerves.

Can mother’s milk increase intelligence? It seems that it can. In a remarkable study published in Lancet during 1992 (Vol. 339, p. 261-4), a group of British workers randomly placed premature infants into two groups. One group received a proper formula, the other group received human breast milk. Both fluids were given by stomach tube. These children were followed up for over 10 years. In intelligence testing, the human milk children averaged 10 IQ points higher! Well, why not? Why wouldn’t the correct building blocks for the rapidly maturing and growing brain have a positive effect?

In the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1982) Ralph Holman described an infant who developed profound neurological disease while being nourished by intravenous fluids only. The fluids used contained only linoleic acid – just one of the essential fatty acids. When the other, alpha linoleic acid, was added to the intravenous fluids the neurological disorders cleared.

In the same journal five years later Bjerve, Mostad and Thoresen, working in Norway found exactly the same problem in adult patients on long term gastric tube feeding.

In 1930 Dr. G.O. Burr in Minnesota working with rats found that linoleic acid deficiencies created a deficiency syndrome. Why is this mentioned? In the early 1960s pediatricians found skin lesions in children fed formulas without the same linoleic acid. Remembering the research, the addition of the acid to the formula cured the problem. Essential fatty acids are just that and cows’ milk is markedly deficient in these when compared to human milk.
Snuff smoking is bad, but some comes lung cancer and others do not want to say that smoking is okay?

This isn’t a question it’s a rant. From its title, it’s clearly a rant from someone lucky enough not to have had breast cancer, since it’s always those who haven’t had cancer (and lately usually teenagers for some reason) who come on here preaching to the rest of us about how we got it.

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had been vegan (ie no dairy, so no milk at all) for 8 years.Avoiding dairy didn’t stop me getting breast cancer, it didn’t cure me and I’m sure as hell not relying on it to stop recurrences or metastases.

Learn some facts about cancer before you come on the cancer forum shouting to people who have had cancer about how they got it.

If dairy was the cause of breast cancer I’d still have two breasts.

Is medicine right or corrupt?

I know how hard our scientists are working today to find a cure for things like cancer, AIDS, HIV, and diabetes. But in the long run, will medicine just backfire? Like today, there are a lot of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are extremely strong. We made them that way because we overused antibiotics and some of them found a way to resist it.
I think medicine takes away natural defenses such as natural selection and evolution. Because we are constantly creating artificial things to protect us, we as a species are not growing stronger ourselves.

Example: 2% of the world population has a disease. Without a medicine, let’s say 1.5% succumb to it but .5% develop natural resistance. The disease is still at its same strength level, but the humans are stronger. Now let’s say we develop a medicine to cure the disease and save the 2%. Some of the disease will develop resistance to the medicine and come back stronger. So we’ve saved 2% but is that worth weakening the rest? WhatdoUthink?

Interesting question. But I think it is incorrect to view natural selection and evolution as "natural defenses" against illness. These are processes that have continued for billions of years on Earth, and will continue to do so for billions of years more. And although your point concerning misued antibiotics is well taken, the microbes that antibiotics are designed to fight will evolve with or without the misuse of antibiotics – it’s simply a matter of time.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), on the other hand, is an example of evolution and adaptation in overdrive, as it has constantly mutated and strengthened since exploding onto the world scene. The difficulty in finding effective treatments for AIDS, let alone a cure, comes from HIV’s success in changing itself faster than researchers can keep up with, which lead former Merck researcher Mark Goldman to comment, "Right now, the virus is just smarter than we are."

On the other hand, there is a biological imperative for a species to preserve itself, and humans are not the only species to utilize medicine as a means of self-preservation. Some species of parrots in Australia have been observed ingesting certain clays in order to neutralize poisons that farmers sometimes use on grain. So, on a more basic level, I think the use of medicine in order to preserve a species is not just ethical, but also an imperative.

Natural resistance is another issue that borders on the controversial issue of eugenics. During the infamous Black Death in Europe, there were a select few humans who had inherited from both parents the genetic code that essentially rendered those individuals immune to bubonic plague; unfortunately, medicine being what it was during the Middle Ages, these people could only provide comfort for the afflicted instead of actual relief.

Hippocrates "let your food be your medicine"?

Many great minds in history were vegetarian.
There is a connection between our digestive tracts and our mental well-being. The connection lies in what some call the ‘enteric’ and the central nervous systems. Stating our bodies have two nervous systems, both affected by our food.

Now, aside from our mental well-being, there are the cases of people who have become vegetarian after being diagnosed with lifelong diseases, and were able to reverse the condition and in many such cases, cure themselves, such as diabetes and cancer.

Not to mention most centenarians were and are vegetarians and usually only eat/ate natural foods.
Early communities who believed in such strict diets and work/exercise were the Pythagorans, Essenes and Therapeutae to name a few, often reaching ages older than our modern super-centenarians.

Why, then, Doctors only receive about 10-12 hours of these nutritional courses, learning instead, to cover our symptoms, thus creating new ones?

Doctors are only the mechanics of the human body. They fix what is wrong.

However, nutritionists are specialized in preventive measures.

BTW, where did you hear that they only receive limited training?

My wife and I noticed that we both get anxious anytime we eat Splenda. It has gotten to the point where I know almost instantly when I accidentally eat it. The other day I was feeling anxious, and sure enough I found out that it was in the English muffins I had for breakfast. Another time I felt anxiety and it turns out that the sample toothpaste I had used in the morning had sucralose in it. I have found many testimonies regarding people who experience anxiety from eating Splenda I am wondering if this is common?

Yes. I had the same symptoms. In addition, I had a number of other medical problems as a result of taking sucralose (Splenda).

I like to say sucralose, not Splenda, because that is what Splenda is. And it is in a lot of stuff. The package doesn’t have to say Splenda to have sucralose in it. You have to read labels.

About 3 years ago…

Every morning at work, I would make myself a cup of coffee. I mixed two packets of Splenda® in my coffee. In addition, I used Coffeemate sugar free French Vanilla liquid creamer, which also contains sucralose. I would drink two to four cups of coffee a day.

My anxiety was extreme and I could not stand it anymore. The best way to describe the way I felt after drinking one cup of coffee with sucralose in it was that it was like drinking six cups of coffee. My heart was pounding and my anxiety was soaring.

I decided to stop using caffeine and start drinking decaffeinated coffee hoping that this will help. Therefore, one Monday morning, I started drinking decaffeinated coffee. I made it the same way I did with the caffeinated coffee, two packets of Splenda and Coffeemate creamer. After drinking it, I felt exactly the same way. I complained to the person in my office, who is responsible for ordering the coffee, that, the decaffeinated coffee she purchased was not decaffeinated but was really coffee that had caffeine in it.

I continued to drink the decaffeinated, without any reduced nervousness.

Frustrated, I decided to drink caffeine free chamomile tea. I picked this type of tea because it is supposed to have a calming effect. I made the tea with two packets of Splenda® and no creamer. After drinking the tea, the overwhelming anxiety started up again. This is when I finally realized that the only thing that was the same between all of these drinks was the Splenda®!

I immediately stopped using Splenda in my coffee. It was amazing. The overwhelming anxiety went away immediately.

I used sucralose for 6 years and I had a number of medical problems as a result. Ready for this: Overwelming anxiety, depression, mood swings, confusion, memory losses, diarrhea, constipation, cramps, fatigue, back pain, joint pain, numbness in arms and legs, blurred vision, insomnia and heart palpitations.

I went to a gastroenteroligist, had a colonoscopy, and other gastrointestinal test. I was put on medication for about 3 years.

I went to a psychiatrist and was put on antidepressants and anti anxiety medication.

My back pain and the other symptoms, I just dealt with.

I contributed all my problems to the natural aging process.

Today, I feel a whole lot better. Although, I believe I have suffered long term effects of taking sucralose. I learned that the FDA does not protect the American people. That sucralose is a poison.

It saddens me to see that children are using this stuff. That there are hundreds, maybe thousands of people who are using it, have medical problems and don’t even know that they are caused by what is in those yellow packets.

well i’ve been to my ob/gyn who doesn’t seem so concerned about my symptom’s i have almosty all the symptom’s of pcos except the diabetes also my doc did a blood test on my hormones and says there normal,but my ultrasound shows some fybrotic cycts in my uterus,i can’t handle this acne anymore i’m 35 never had this problem in my life i’ve also been infertile for the last four years with no medical explanation according to my dr.i’ve already had children and it will happen when it happens.If i do have pcos are there any natural remedy’s to cure it so that i may become pregnant,or should i just go see another ob/gyn for a second opinion?i’d rather do a homr remedy if you know any thanks.p.s my periods have been comming on there own for the last three months does that mean i may becoming regular and ovulation has been taking place?

Researchers from the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami Miller School Of Medicine and Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden published their findings on line March 7 in Nature Medicine. Although still in the experimental stages of clinical research, islet cell transplantation is currently considered the most promising method for curing type 1 diabetes. Using this novel technology, DRI researchers were also able to watch how the immune system launches its attack on the islets cells, something that occurs in the natural course of type 1 diabetes onset. This viewing platform also gives scientists a way to watch the body’s response to new therapeutic strategies that attempt to save islets from this deadly immune system attack.

Can an Owner of a Nutrition Store tell people..?

I worked briefly at a Nutrition Store and heard the owner on several occassions tell people they should sue Tylenol or he has given people certain herbs other natural substances and it has cured them of cancer. He can eliminate diabetes wtih another natural substance. Can he get into trouble doing that. Oh, he has no formal education just so called experience.

If he can’t do that legally then how do I put a stop to it before it really hurts someone?

If he can do that legally is there a way to warn people of his bad business practices?
Okay…I don’t have a prob. with him as an x-employer because I worked 4 Saturday only, was paid under the table, and was sexually harrassed the whole time. I was concerned for the people I saw coming into the store. If I wanted to nail the business owner I would get him on sexual harrassment.

Peanut butter question, and anyone have advice for eating to prevent diabetes?

I’m 39 and had my first child nearly 2 years ago. I’m about 135 lbs–not overweight but I do have belly fat I didn’t used to have pre-baby. I was gestational while pregnant, and Type 2 runs in my family on my father’s side. I know exercise is important but have trouble fitting that into my schedule, beyond walking on nice days when I’m not chained to my desk at my FT job or caring for my daughter, who does keep me pretty busy and active. I have tried to some degree to maintain a lower carb, higher protein and fiber diet like I followed while I was gestational (and it was entirely managed then with diet and exercise, primarily yoga and walking). I have a terrible, terrible sweet tooth. I have a very, very difficult time turning down sweets and often don’t when I know I should. I fear I know my fate but if there are ways to prolong or prevent it, I really do want to try. Peanut butter has been a good thing for me. Just a spoonful or two keeps me from wanting to snack more much of the time. But I noticed Reduced Fat Peanut Butter has more carbs than regular or even all natural peanut butter. I’m wondering if I should stick with the regular form of PB since I’m not overweight, so that my carbs are ultimately lower. Thoughts?

Plus any and all good food tips that might help me prevent Type 2 and also satisfy or cure my sweet tooth would be appreciated.

Motivation to exercise wouldn’t hurt either. :)

Beware of low carb labels! Beware of low sugar labels as well!

Here’s the problem, there is no carbs in fat, so when a company wants to reduce the carbs they replace sugars with fats to keep the taste. The opposite is true as well, there is no fat in sugar. You can take out the fat, but you have to get the taste back with sugar.

Overall, calories is more important than anything else. If you watch calories, you’ll be also reduce fat and sugar consumption because both are high in calories.

Staying fit and eating less processed food will help you avoid type 2 diabetes. Eat foods that have a low glycemic index score (lots of sites with that info) when possible. An occasional sweet treat is not the end of the world and will not, but itself, cause diabetes. Remeber that sweets are a treat and shouldn’t be a basic food staple at home.
