Well glycogen stimulates the liver to release glucose in the blood stream. It's only given when a diabetic person has fallen unconscious from low blood sugar.

Insulin is the hormone injected day-to-day to lower blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetics rely soley on this to manage their conditoin. Not all type 2 diabetics use it, most use meds, diet and exercise.

Hope I helped :)
References :
I have type 1 diabetes, I use the second hormone regularly and thankfully never needed the first one :)

The answer to the question if it RAISED blood sugar levels it's GLUCAGON... Which stimulates glycoGENolysis :-)....

Insulin, blood sugar drops because it's going into cells
Glucagon, blood sugar increases
Glycogen, storage form of glucose in hepatocytes, muscle and some small pockets in kidneys and intestines.

Hope this helps :)
