quick ways to lower your blood sugar for a type 1 diabetic?

I’m a type 1 diabetic and my numbers are always on the high side. I was just wondering if there were any quick ways to lower your blood sugar?

If you are a type 1 diabetic, and you are "always on the high side" then the most likely reason your blood sugars are high is because your food and insulin are not well matched. It may be that you are not taking enough of your basal insulin as well. These are things that you must discuss with your doctor and see if perhaps your doctor can work with you to change your insulin. The BEST plan is to take a long acting basal insulin like Lantus (there’s also a new one the name of which I forget) for all your needs without food.

Then also taking a short acting bolus insulin like Humalog (others are fine too) to correct your highs before eating AND to match to the amount of food you are about to eat.

If you are on a different insulin plan like 70/30 or are not matching your insulin to your food…it’s harder to gain control of your blood glucose.

However, with ANY change you MUST see your doctor and discuss with him/her. In fact if you are NOT seeing an endocrinologist for your diabetes care, I highly recommend you do. The endo is the expert in this area and some general practioners are not as good with diabetes care–some are, but some are kinda old fashioned and stuck in older ways of doing things that are ’safe’ but not as effective.

Also once you’ve seen your doc or endo…ask for a referral to a diabetes educator and registered dietitian. They can work with you to refine your insulin plan and figure out how to eat or count carbs so that everything works together nicely.

Good luck!

Before you check your numbers, do you wash your hands?? If you don’t, you won’t get an accurate reading!

take a good look at your diet… I’m sure you know or have been told by your doctor.
you might have take out your white sugars but what about the other culprits.
and next look at how much you exercise. too much can cause a dangerous drop and not enough can keep it high.

you sound like you do not want to be insulin dependent so watch the corn you eat and startches that break down to carbs in your system.

    good luck

be careful….you shouldn’t do strenuous exercise if your BS is over 240…that can be very bad on your heart. I have "heard", not sure if it’s true, that drinking water can help it come down. Sounds kinda crazy to me. (R) insulin is the quicker one or any quick acting (Humalog) starts to bring it down rather quickly.

Exercise generally burns off the glucose in the body before any other energy source, like fat.
Regular exercise can increase your metabolism.
Talk to your doctor… good luck.

Go for walks. Do not listen to those who tell you not to walk if you have high blood sugar. It is recommended highly by doctors for both types of diabetics to walk. It can dramatically reduce your blood sugar if you walk for at least 45 min.. Even if you have heart trouble, walking is recommended as a healthy safe exercise.
