causes for high blood sugar besides diabetes?

I recently had a fasting glucose test and my sugar was 109. My doctor says I am pre-diabetic. I am in shock since I excercise daily, eat only whole grains, veggies and fruit, nver drink sodas or eat fast food and am actually underwieght(105 lbs). Does anyone know of other reasons for the high level? I have been under stress lately from fear of losing my job. Could this cause the rise?

I wonder what the doctor thinks of someone who has a reading of 126, like me, and I am not diabetic?

109 is not that high.

A better way to check is a A1c test, it ives you a indication of what your sugar levels have been doing over the past 3 months or so. If that reading is over 7.5% then you are diabetic, while under 6% you are not diabetic, and in between you may be pre-diabetic.

I guess your doctor could say the whole world is either diabetic or "Pre-diabetic" in that they all have a chance of getting it some day. I would think a reading over 130 would be considered pre-diabetic, while a reading as low as yours would not be considered diabetic at all (with a supporting normal A1c test).

One test on one morning is not a great indication of your health. Perhaps if they took one test each monday for a month, then you will have an idea of your total health.

High blood sugar is the very definition of diabetes. There is no other cause.

It could be due to stress but it could also be genetic. Diabetes in your family is the highest risk factor there is with excessive weight running a close 2nd.

And in the event you aren’t aware of any diabetics in your family history that doesn’t mean there are none, many diabetics have never been diagnosed and many hide the disease from other family members.

Keep a close check on it, I’d have it tested every 6 months.

i think you need a new doctor!

A blood sugar reading of 109 in a person that is underweight is absolutely normal. NORMAL fasting blood sugar sare 80-120. That 109 is almost right in the middle.

The other "key" is being "Pre-Diabetic". There is no such thing. Being "pre-diabetic" is like being "a little bit pregnant". either you ARE diabetic or you ARE NOT.

"Pre-Diabetic" is an out-dated, Politically Correct term that many OLD doctors use to scare their patients into a better lifestyle. but if everything you’ve said is true, you already lead a better lifestyle than most people.

It sounds as though your doctor has not kept up on his professional training. There might be one way to tell.

ASK your doctor to perform an A1C test. this test takes an AVERAGE of your blood sugaes over the past 90 days. you DO NOT habe to fast before taking the test, and you cannot "cheat" it by eating correctly for a couple of days before the test.

A NORMAL A1C reading is between 5 and 6. if the reading is above 7, that indicates diabetes. a reading between 6 and 7 means that you need to pay closer attention to your diet, and repeat the test in 90 days.

the A1C test is the State-of-the-Art in diabetes testing. it is good for both diagnosis and maintainance, it is quick, easy, and CHEAP. Most doctoes do the test in their office, but if the doctor hasn’t purchased the equipment, he will have to take a blood sample to send to a lab for 2-3 days.

The A1C test has COMPLETELY replaced the urine test for diagnosis, and has delegated the Finger Stick test to its proper posisition as daily maintainance tool. The Glucose Tolerance Test is now used only to confirm the A1C readings that indicate diabetes. this test is SO important that the American Diabetes Association recommends that EVERYONE take the A1C test one a years, and diabetic patients take the test every 90 days.

if you doctor questions your request, says you don’t need it, or doesn’t know what it is, then you need to RUN AWAY as quickly as possible and find a new doctor!

if he takes the test but doesn’t discuss the results with you, then again you need to RUN AWAY to a new, more knowledgable doctor.

By The Way, both stress and certain medications (like steroids, especially Prednisone) can cause high blood sugars — but YOUR sugars doesn’t seem to be high.
