Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease condition wherein the body becomes unable to control blood glucose level due to the absence of insulin or its inability to effectively use it. Diabetes is a condition which is not easy to manage. It requires a lot of lifestyle changes. You have to be determined. You have to be disciplined. Without discipline you won’t go far in managing diabetes. According to 2008 diabetes statistics, there now more than 24 million cases of diabetes in the United States alone. And this number continues to grow everyday. Since diabetes has no cure, it’s important to watch your diet and live a healthy lifestyle. Diabetes prevention is better than cure.
The primary goal is diabetes mellitus treatment is to your body’s control blood sugar level. There are 3 kinds of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Diabetes symptoms are similar in all three types. However, management varies for each type.
Diabetes type 1 treatment includes exercise, following a diabetes diet and having regular insulin shots. Since type 1 DM is brought upon by an autoimmune condition in which the body destroys its own insulin producing cells, insulin shots are needed to provide the body with its regular dose of insulin.
Diabetes type 2 treatment includes weight reduction, diabetes diet treatment and diabetes drug treatment. If blood sugar is still elevated then you will have to supplement by adding diabetes medications such as Sulfonylureas, Biguanides, Thiazolidinediones, Meglitinides and others. Most type 2 DM medications are taken orally and each kind has a different function. For example, the action of Sulfonylureas and Meglitinides is to stimulate your pancreas to produce insulin. Biguanides reduce glucose production by the liver, while Thiazolidinediones make your body more responsive to insulin.
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) it is important that guidelines for a diabetic diet be followed. This will help in helping control blood sugar levels and is an important part of type 2 diabetes treatment. Your diet should be balanced and should provide the right nutritional components. It should also be low in fat, low in cholesterol and in high fiber. Your total daily calorie count should be divided equally into three. Eating too much in one meal can lead to hyperglycemia while eating too little let can lead to hypoglycemia. The secret here is balance. ADA used to ban simple sugars. But now they allow simple sugars as long as they are consumed in minimal amounts. Exercise with goal of losing weight is also an important part in managing diabetes because this boosts the body’s response to insulin. When that happens, you will be able to control blood sugar better. Treatment for diabetes can be expensive. But the benefits in treating this condition early far outweigh the risks. Leaving diabetes untreated can result in long-term complications. Drug treatment for Type 2 DM will differ from patient to patient for this will depend on what works best for each individual.
Gestation diabetes treatment includes eating a healthy and balanced diet, regular exercise, blood glucose level monitoring and taking insulin injections if necessary. Oral medications are not encouraged because they may cross over the placental barrier and affect fetal growth.
