blood sugar control

Do herbal remedies help forstall type 2 diabetes or at least do they help control blood sugar?

I am"pre diabetes" and experiment with Cinnamon and Chromium,is this a waste of time and money?

Let me answer your question very directly and frankly. Diabetes is not something you want to gamble with on your own. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to blindness, stroke, kidney failure, limb amputation, and death.

Type I diabetes results when the body doesn’t make insulin. Type II diabetes is when you make insulin, but the body doesn’t use it effectively (or you do not make enough). Insulin is produced by the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Its function is to serve as a carrier molecule to transport glucose across the plasma membrane of human cells. Without insulin, your cells can’t use glucose — which means that your cells and organs gradually starve and die.

There are many treatments available for diabetes and pre-diabetes. Only a qualified medical professional should decide which ones are right for you. Please do not gamble with your own life by experimenting with herbal supplements on your own. I am NOT opposed to herbs and use several myself, but as someone in the medical field I know enough to seek competent advice first. Your doctor will appreciate your wanting to be an active participant in your own care.

One more note — one of the most important things to do is to stay in shape, lose excess weight, and exercise regularly. Exercise helps the body use insulin more effectively. Check with your healthcare provider before starting any exercise program.

Yes, it’s a waste of time and money. You need to speak to your physician about lifestyle changes.

There’s no sexy quick fix, lose weight, eat correctly, exercise. DON’T experiment with your health.

Asian ginseng is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat diabetes. It has been shown to enhance the release of insulin from the pancreas and to increase the number of insulin receptors. It also has a direct blood sugar-lowering effect. A recent double-blind study found that 200mg of ginseng extract per day improved blood sugar control, as well as energy levels in NIDDM.
Two single-blind studies have found that aloe vera juice helps lower blood sugar levels in people with NIDDM. One study found that 1 tablespoon twice daily notable improved the efficacy of the oral blood sugar-lowering drug glibdenclamide. The other study found that the juice by itself was effective.

Talk to your doctor before adding any herbal remedy to your medication regiment. There are risks involved with even the most common herbs if they are combined with other medications, etc. If you are on any other meds, be sure to talk to your doctor before using any natural drugs. The interactions could be very dangerous to your health or even fatal.

The best way to attempt to stall Type 2 diabetes is to eat a healthy diet and to exercise. Remember though, even the best laid plan can fall short sometimes. Even if you should develop Type 2, it is a very controllable condition.

    Good luck and best wishes…

By and large, the answer is no on both questions. It is possible that some herb extract somewhere which will do one or the other. After all, a promising drug in trials as I write this was first identified in gila monsters (the poisonous lizard from the SW N American desert). But such a miracle drug from herbs has not yet been found.

There are lots of claims about this or that helping, and some might to a small degree, but none yet studied has substantial effects on the course of diabetes or the current condition. Studies quoted are generally poorly done (very easy to do), to small (large ones are expensive), not repeatable (unfortunate as unrepeateble results are sometimes spectacular) or published in an obscure journal which doesn’t carefully review its sumissions.

Claims that <whatever> has been used for thousands of years by the ancient Chinese or ancient Indian or even by yesterday’s hikers aren’t very convincing, however spectacular they may be. It is very easy to report anecdotes, but much harder to develop repeatable experimental results.

We now understand quite a great deal about what diabetes (both Types) is and how to identify it. Not quite enough yet to cure it (either type), but … In many respects it is no longer a mystery disease any more at all. Rather like broken legs in some respects. And it’s clear that if there exists such a herbal drug, it has not yet been discovered.

There’s lots of quackery running around about diabetes. people should avoid getting bitten by ducks. It’s expensive and in the case of diabetes may cause any of several bad things. Blindness, amputation, kidney failure, … Diabetes is not something with which to experiment on yourself. Unless you are very very adventurous and will be happy with the outcome however bad.
