Is diabetes caused by low or high blood sugar?

If someone has diabetes is it because their blood sugar is too high or too low? I’m having some symptoms, to get tested, am I supposed to fast for 12 hours and then go and see my doctor?

It is because there blood sugars are too high. Your symptoms of being a diabetic would be increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss and a fruity smelling breath. If your going to get tested to see if you are or not you do not have to do anything especially fasting because it isn’t going to matter either way. The doctor will do a simple blood test and probably a urine culture to see if you are diabetic or not.

You have it backwards—high or low blood sugar can be caused by diabetes.

Diabetes is the inability of the body to regulate the blood sugar levels by using the sugar to make energy. The body is resistant to the "insulin" it produces, which is the chemical that allows the body to use the sugar properly.

When you have diabetes, your insulin is not used properly, and sugar levels in your blood go up & down drastically.

Diabetes is high blood sugar. To get an accurate blood sugar level the test is done fasting.

Did your doctor ask you to fast? If he/she didn’t you should see them first before fasting for a long period of time. You didn’t mention what your symptoms are. So until you see a doctor I wouldn’t do anything extreme in preparing for your visit.

You need to call in advance and ask for instructions as to fasting or not.

There are two basic causes for diabetes. Type one is caused by an immune system malfunction that destroys the body’s ability to produce insulin (necessary to get glucose into the cells for energy). Type two is usually caused by a combination of a genetic predisposition, poor diet, lack of exercise, and/or excess weight resulting in a phenomenon called insulin resistance. Both result in excess glucose in the system (high blood sugar) and can be deadly if not dealt with properly.
