high blood sugar

It’s not normal to have high blood sugar before eating anything for breakfast is it?

I just went to the chiropractor this morning and they took some kind of a blood sugar screen on me. They said I had too much sugar in my system. I am pregnant and I was going to get do the test for gestational diabetes next week but now I am pretty sure that I have it. Because that is what they do for the test, right? Don’t they have you fast for 3 hours or something? So my blood sugar shouldn’t have been high from the previous night, right?

Hi Joy,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! You didn’t say how far along you are, but of course being pregnant causes a lot of changes – hormonal as well as necessary weight gain. If you didn’t have diabetes before, you might have gestational diabetes. High blood sugar before breakfast is a fair indicator.

If you have gestational diabetes, it’s okay. You’ll just have to be more careful with what you eat and test your blood sugars until the baby is born. Your diabetes should go away after that.

I’d strongly advise you to keep your weight down when you’re not pregnant. Once you have gestational diabetes your risk goes up for developing type 2 later in life. Keep the weight down and reduce that risk.

There’s a free report on diabetes available at the website below.

Hoping all goes well with you and your baby!

If you’re pregnant, it’s very important for you to see your OB. Gestational diabetes is nothing to mess with, but is highly controllable. They’ll give you several tests to determine if you have it. Most women with GD go back to normal levels after giving birth.

A fasting blood sugar shouldn’t be high. Normal range is 60-120, and over 125, especially when you haven’t eaten, indicates diabetes. But, only a doctor can correctly diagnose you.

When you go to get tested for gestational diabetes, they have you drink this sugary stuff, then you have to wait in the waiting room for a few hours, then they test your blood. Don’t worry, even if you do have gestational diabetes, you shouldn’t continue to have it after your baby is born.

However, if you do have gestational diabetes during your pregnancy, you are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later on in life, so make sure you are making healthy choices. Good luck and congrats!

I would definately go see your OB/doctor.
I’m not sure about the 3hr fasting as i havent been pregnant but i do know that without diabetes your blood sugar should actually be rather low seeing as your body has gone up to 12 hrs without food.
AS a diabetic i know that my blood sugar is high of a morning if i dont have the right insulin dose when i eat dinner

I hope all goes well and you have a beautiful lil baby.
i’m pretty sure if it is diabetes they will only get you to take tablets not injections (so u dont have to worry about the needles)

Hello Joy, I am also Joy…and I just had to answer a question from a "fellow Joy"! I agree with everything everyone has said; you are already taking good care of yourself since you are already scheduled for a glucose tolerance test next week. Good for you! and yes, you’re right, if your fasting blood sugar is above 110, you are likely a gestational diabetic. and yes, you are at higher risk for developing type II diabetes later in life, especially with a family history of DM. You are also at greater risk if you give birth to a large baby, greater than 9# birth weight. Much good luck to you and your baby.
