high blood sugar

What are the effects of high blood sugar (immediately)?

Recently diagnosed type 2. had too much sugar today. Slept 3 hours, feel groggy and sluggish. my back hurts. are these symptoms of high blood sugar and are there anymore symptoms?

I’ve bee diabetic for almost 20 years, and I hate to correct a "paramedic" but sleepiness/grogginess is definitely a symptom of hyperglycemia. All of the symptoms you have listed are signs. I have lower back problems, and it hurts a lot worse if my sugars are high. Nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to pain… all of em.

Do you see an Endocrinologist regularly? They would be the best person to talk to about this sort of information, as well as managing your diabetes in general.

Cheers and best of health

Are you taking Metformin? The symptoms don’t ring a bell. I have type 2 also.

nausea, dizziness, frequent urination, and a fruity (smells like alcohol), disorientation. These are a few of the big signs of high blood sugar. A person with high blood sugar may smell like alcohol and be acting drunk, they are often mistaken for drunks, its that similar. A person acting this way would have very high blood sugar and would require medical intervention. Do you have a glucometer? you should check your blood sugar if your concerned.

Drowsiness is def. not a symptom of high blood sugar, its the oposite…….forget that….it is wrong, the guy who corrected me is correct, it def. is a symptom

As long as you don’t go over 200 for too long (like days), you’ll probably recover just fine. Whenever I get too high, I immediately go out and walk fast for at least 20 minutes. This usually brings me back down to normal. Groggy and sluggish are typical of high sugar. Back hurting is not. There are several other symptoms. You should concern yourself less with the symptoms and more with monitoring and learning as much about caring for the disease as you can. Join tudiabetes.com and meet lots of friendly folks like myself who are diligently trying to find answers.

Avoid sugar, especially soda, candy & cookies. High blood sugar makes you tired. It hurts your kidneys which makes your back hurt. Lose the sugar or you’ll have big problems.
Get a glucose meter & check your blood sugar. Check on the upper arm, it doesn’t hurt.
